ENAC online license test
The achievement of the online license for gifts, or the certificate for drone pilots “Non-Critical Operations“, consists of a series of 40 multiple choice questions. To pass it, it is necessary to answer exactly at least 30 questions and reach 75% of the score.
The test, to be completed in one hour of time, is however not trivial, because it implies the reasoned knowledge of a series of subjects and information concerning:
- aviation safety,
- airspace restrictions and rules,
- aeronautical rules,
- operating procedures,
- HW knowledge of the UAS,
- knowledge of terminology,
- the mandatory nature of the insurance,
- limits of human performance.
How to prepare for the ENAC online test
For the preparation for the test, as already mentioned, it is necessary to study a set of 3 handouts on ENAC reference documentation, available for download free of charge, namely:
- Syllabus: which contains all aspects related to operations, security, air rules, privacy, etc.,
- Regulation “Mezzi aerei a pilotaggio remoto” Ed. 3″ (The Bible)
- Circolare ATM-09 – Remote Piloted Aircraft Airspace Use Criteria.
Due to the contents of the legal policy of the ENAC website, it is not possible to link the above documents, which must be searched on the ENAC website by the reader. The list of documents however, nevertheless facilitates the reader in their search.
In order to maximize the results for the theoretical preparation for the exam for the online drone license, we recommend following the flow chart showed below:
For those who do not want to read Syllabus but listen to the contents, eleven videos made by ENAC are available on the YouTube channel in which the topics covered in Syllabus are explained.
Here the link for the first video the others are consequential.
Perfect preparation for the drone license
As we did when we went to school, the secret is both in studying but also in reviewing, in order to dispel any doubts or uncertainties. In this regard, on the net there are some good videos, but not many, with which to make a quick and profitable review.
Among the few valid online videos I would recommend those of Andrea Pinotti, a person with considerable preparation and with the gift of knowing how to offer things clearly and precisely (availabe only in italian).
Here are the links to the three free video lessons on YouTube:
- Video lesson 1 – Patentino Droni – Corso per passare il test online – parte 1
- Video lesson 2 – Patentino Droni – Corso per passare il test online – parte 2
- Video lesson 3 – Patentino Droni – Corso per passare il test online – parte 3.
Terminology and Acronyms
In the test, several questions may occur that refer to terms and acronyms used for drones. Although these questions are apparently easy, in reality they are very insidious and it is good to prepare properly.
In this regard, the advice is to read the articles of the 4my drone Blog on the topic:
- “Drones: Acronyms & Terms“
- “Ap, Hc, Mc, As: LIC15-ENAC drone acronyms“
- “Drones-UAVs – Definitions and acronyms for orientation“.
Drone license test – Answer similar questions
“Practice make perfect” say the British and in this regard there is nothing better than trying to answer similar tests regarding drones and without spending money.
The QuizVds website site (link quizvds.it) offers a series of questions which have the advantage of:
- be specific about drones,
- concern the subjects covered by the online license,
- contain the answers for verification.
Below is a screnshoot of the subjects and the number of quizzes per subject extracted from the QuizVds website:
Here is an example of a multiple choice question:
and finally an example of exact answer verification:
The quizzes are not the same as the exam but very close, they range through all the subjects provided and allow you to check your preparation.
In fact, it is important to remember that it is not possible to disclose the questions in any way, and therefore be wary of those who, for a fee, promise you miraculous tests with the answers covered by the ENAC drone online license.
Online drone license – Preparation and strategy
We said that there are 30 questions that must be answered exactly to pass the test and reach the desired 75%.
The time to test is 1 hour, more than enough to review the answers and questions a second time if necessary.
Be careful though! If 2 points are awarded for each correct answer, 1 point is subtracted for each wrong answer, while for each unanswered question no points are taken away.
So if you have answered for example 32 questions, and on these you have made two wrong, the score will be: 60-2 = 58 or 58/40 equal to 72.5% and no license !!!
In fact, you must not only answer but you must also be a little strategist, as in this case the saying “Melius est abundare quam deficit” does not apply because “abundare” could come back to haunt you.
It is better to answer 30 questions carefully and correctly than to risk!
Also remember that in the event of failure, the same questions will not be asked on the next test, as they are handled dynamically and randomly.
Questions and Answers – Attention
At least until the last session of 25 June 2020, several quizzes proposed by ENAC for the achievement of the “Non-Critical Operations” pilot certificate, were:
- with grammatical errors,
- in a number of cases the three answers are wrong,
- several questions are misleadingly asked.
We are not sure whether changes will take place from 6th July 2020.
The only sure thing is that you will have to pay 31.00 euros in advance for the certificate and you will only have 4 attempts instead of the 6 planned during the “promo” of the period March 5th – June 25th.
