App for DJI leisure and professional drones

As we know, DJI is the world’s leading company in recreational drones and professional drones. To date, DJI includes 8 models for recreational use with camera: Spark, Mavic Pro, Mavic Air, Mavic 2 Pro, Mavic 2 Zoom, Mavic Pro Platinum, Phantom 4 Pro V2 and Phantom 4 Pro. To these, starting today 30th October 2019, the latest addition to the Mavic Mini has been added.

As for professional drones, there are 9 other models that can also be configured with payload and are: Inspire 2, Mavic 2 Enterpise, Matrice 200 V2, Matrice 600, Phantom 4 RTK, P4 Multispectral, Agras T16, MG 1-S and MG-1.

All these drones have already been reviewed, in terms of technical specifications, by 4mydrone.

The DJI ecosystem – Drones, payloads, Sw and Apps

As we know, DJI is not limited to drones but has also produced professional payloads (e.g. Zenmuse just to name it), Ground control systems and software. In particular, it has also developed several Apps for the management of its drones, with alternate successes, since numerous developers have in turn churned out apps for DJI drones, both free and paid, of good quality.

The purpose of this article is therefore to clarify a bit by identifying which DJI or third-parties developer apps to use for DJI drones.

App DJI

DJI has developed 3 Apps to manage its drones in the Android and iOS versions: DJI 4Go, DJI Go and DJI Pilot, to which is added today the DJI Fly App created for the Mavic Mini drone.

The Apps, already reviewed by 4mydrone with detailed technical data sheets, perform both the task of managing the flight of the various drones, and that of setting and managing the gimbal and the on-board video camera, and the real-time vision of the camera view.

It is important to highlight that DJI apps are not usable with all drones. In fact, the DJI Go App in the iOS and Android versions is to be used only with the drones of the Phantom 3, Inspire 1, Matrice 600 series and with Osmo gimbal.

DJI 4 Go, on the other hand, is to be used with the drones of the Mavic, Phantom 4, Spark, Inspire 2, Matrix 200/210/210 RTK series.

For the management of the video camera and the gimbal for the drones of the Matrice 200/210/210 RTK series, Phantom 4 RTK, Mavic there is also DJI Pilot App, which unlike the DJI 4 Go does not perform other functions in addition to managing the camera.

DJI drone app from third-parties developers

As already anticipated, the DJI Apps are not exactly the best both in terms of performance and functionality, but they are still free.

So if you want to use more performing Apps or with even more dedicated features, you need to look to the Apps of third-parties developers. However, these sometimes provide for In-App purchases. So let’s see those that cover the same functionality (or similar) of the DJI App and that are worth considering (and experimenting), already reviewed by 4mydrone. To access the detailed description of the App just click on the corresponding icon.

Flight Planning and management

In reality, the Apps listed below allow you to plan the autonomous flight of the drone in order to carry out surveys and inspections, therefore they do much more than those developed by the drone manufacturer. However, it is advisable to list them especially for those who need free professional app for flight control and planning.

Conclusions

Using DJI Apps has its advantages, but considering that Apps are not the core business of drone manufacturers, and that objectively they have some flaws, the advice is to also consider the Apps of third-parties developers. Some of these are excellent quality and with a good set of functions especially for those who use the drone for work.
