d-flight – Online maps for flying with the drone
d-flight among the various online services made available through its web portal, offers the possibility, upon registration, to consult the maps of the Italian territory to know the limitations and prescriptions for the flight of drones.
As we know, the knowledge of drone flight limitations (expressed on the web portal from d-flight through colors and screens) is fundamental to be always in order, also and especially when using the drone for free time, to take photos or make movies. Referring therefore to the forthcoming EASA European regulation, even when flying in the “Open” category (see the blog article “European EASA Drones Regulation – Catg. Open“, It is necessary to know and respect the flight restrictions.
How to get in to the maps
In order to access the maps it is necessary to register on the portal as a user. The procedure in this case quite simple even if there are a couple of critical “steps” that must be kept in mind to complete the operation successfully.
Through the browser, search for d-flight (due to the legal policy of the d-flight portal it is not possible to link the d-flight website and/or report images and/or screnshoot from the portal). The login screen will appear in the browser.
To be able to register, click on “Services” at the top right and a new screen will open. After accepting the provided policies, to register, select the “Go directly to registration” button in option 1 of the menu.
The data to register (login)
Once the option 1 button has been clicked, a form will open where you will have to fill in your data, namely:
- User type (if Private or Company),
- Username (at your choice),
- First name,
- Country of birth,
- Province of birth,
- Birth place ,
- Birth date,,
- Fiscal Code.
It is important to select the type of user to be able to access the next form, otherwise the “Next” button will not be enabled. Once this is done, a second form is enabled, with other data to be filled in, namely:
- Country of residence,
- Region of residence,
- Province of residence,
- Place of residence,
- Postal code,
- Residential address,
- House number,
- Mobile phone,
- PEC: (for those who own it),
Once completed, by clicking on “Create“, another summary form appears relating to the general conditions and information on the processing of personal data.
After flagging the “I agree” boxes on the form, click on the “Accept” button at the bottom right, ….. you are finally registered. Confirmation takes place through a video pop-up, which reads “To activate the account, open the email sent to xxxx and click on send“.
Obviously, the account must be confirmed in the email received from the d-flight portal.
The email contains the login data (email address with which you registered) and a temporary password that will only be used for the first access. This must be changed immediately (the system requires it). As confirmation of the successful activation, you will receive an additional email from d-flight.
Here, to register, select the “Go directly to registration” button in option 1 of the menu.
Bear in mind th the confirmation of the email address contained in the email received from d-flight must be confirmed within 12 hours of receipt in the email, under penalty of forfeiture of the procedure.
In addition, if you make a mistake, when registering, to type in your email address, and therefore you do not receive any email, you can repeat the procedure no earlier than 12 hours, because the system “freezes” your data.
Access to d-flight maps
Once registered, to access the maps just click on the half-bust icon in the upper right corner, highlighted with the mouse (login).
Clicking on it opens a pop-up where you can enter the credentials that you defined when registering on the portal. Once you have entered your credentials, you access the d-flight maps, which are the subject of this guide.
The map of Italy appears on the screen, with areas highlighted in different colors.
Read the contents of the maps
The maps can be navigated using the mouse (forward wheel for de-zoom and back for zoom) or through the magnifying glass icon (top center), where you can directly enter the name of the place of interest.
Once the place or places have been identified, by clicking with the right mouse button at the place-area of interest (highlighted with a placeholder on the map), it will then be possible to know the relative imitations and prescriptions (Air Rules), which are highlighted in a dedicated popo-up.
Obviously, the information varies according to the area. In fact, some information, if related to an area not subject to prescriptions and limitations, only the “air rules” will be shown in the box. If, however, the area is subject to limitations, additional information relating to the area concerned will also appear.
To further assist the user in understanding the limits and requirements, the d-flight portal provides a legend (always visible at the bottom left), with an indication of the colors of the different areas and the related flight restrictions. (max height in meters AGL (Above Ground Level).
In this regard, it is essential to remember that:
- in the red zone you don’t fly,
- urban areas are barred from flying,
- the orange, yellow and light blue areas have well-defined height flight restrictions,
- in natural parks you do not fly (unless prior written authorization from the park itself).
Obviously well documented in the portal are the indications relating to the CTR, ATZ as shown for example, for the Naples airport area.
Some limitations of d-flight maps
The d-flight maps are therefore the basic reference for those who want to fly with the drone both for hobby and for work.
Nonetheless, it should be noted that there may be misalignments between what is shown by the portal for a particular area and the constraints that actually exist for that area.
A concrete example concerns the national natural parks present in Italy. As we know in a park you do not fly (so it is an area subject to limitations and as such should be highlighted on the d-flight portal), but these areas, subject to limitations are not highlighted as they should !!!
practical example? The Pollino National Park, the largest in Italy, straddling Basilicata and Calabria. The park, which in fact covers an area of 192,565 hectares, covers an area from the Tyrrhenian Sea to almost the Ionian Sea. As well as the Pollino massif, the Orsomarso mountains are an integral part of the park and extend almost to Scalea.
So, by definition (as for the other parks in Italy), the whole area of the Pollino Park should be closed to flight! By consulting the d-flight map, it is clearly visible that only about 60% of the Park area is subject to flight restrictions and only because it is included in an area with other limitations, while the residual part i
The same thing can be found for other parks such as that of the Gran Sasso, etc. or for the areas of Parks not subject to other limitations.
It is hoped that these areas will also be included in the prohibited and restricted areas.

The service offered by d-flight for what has been said can certainly be improved. In addition, the fluidity of the consultation is slowed down with some browsers such as Firefox, and more fluid and faster with other browsers such as Chrome or Vivaldi.
It is however always advisable before planning a flight with the drone to check the existing limitations in the area intended for the flight, also taking advantage of personal knowledge (perimeters of forbidden areas and natural parks not reported), to avoid incurring fines or complaints.
In any case, it is always a good idea to have some UAV Forecast applications on your smartphone or tablet, which also provides indications on the no fly zones.
