To greet the arrival of 2021, in Scotland instead of the fireworks, they organized themselves differently, putting in place a really beautiful setting created with a swarm of drones.

The event was part of the Edinburgh 2020 Hogmanay festival and produced by Underbelly.

The peculiarity of the show organized through a swarm of drones is that the choreography was created using 150 drones launched simultaneously and piloted by a program based on artificial intelligence.

The drones that, programmed and managed through an AI software, represented a series of words, symbols, animals and shapes in the sky, including a deer, an eagle, a mythical selkie and the Saltire, operated at a maximum height 150 meters AGL and with a speed of 25 mph (40.23 km/h).

Certainly, the beautiful performance is indicative of the fact that these machines, used in training, can be used to create shows and / or characterize events, without having to pollute from the acoustic point of view (especially for animals) and environment by replacing the fires of artifice, dangerous and polluting from all points of view.

Business – Swarm of drones intelligence shows

The Edinburgh experience (which is certainly not the only one), shows the business opportunities based on swarms of drones.

The Edinburgh event immediately raises the opportunities that can arise from the use of drone swarms also as elements characterizing events, currently managed through even very banal habits.

The use of drone swarms as basic elements of a show, in fact, requires skills and professionalism that are certainly not trivial, as well as a considerable dose of creativity.

The use of applications for synchronous flight, the composition of figures, writings or symbols in the air by drones, requires the use of a series of figures with specific skills and know-how, such as:

  • flight engineer,
  • A.I. expert,
  • flight choreographer,
  • coordinator of take-off and landing,
  • drone maintainer,
  • flight safety expert, etc.,

just to name a few figures, obviously without neglecting the supplier of the drone swarm which could be a specialized drone operator operating in this field.

Swarm of drones intelligence – Business opportunity

Although at first impression one might think the business opportunities related to drone swarm shows are linked only to a certain type of event, in reality the use of drones in swarm represents one of the most interesting and innovative fields for the use of drones.

If the use of drones in swarms for choreography areas is certainly of effect and captures everyone’s attention, no less are the business opportunities (deliberately ignoring the military ones), and the development of skills related to the use of swarm drones for:

  • search and rescue,
  • detailed mapping of areas,
  • exploration of environments to be secured,
  • large-scale precision agriculture,
  • environmental scientific research,
  • swarm intelligence, pollution
  • monitoring in certain areas, etc.,

The examples mentioned above are not the result of imagination, but represent studies, projects and practical cases conducted through the use of drone swarms also in swarm intelligence projects.

Hence the need for specific professional profiles with adequate skills able to operate in teams or individually to place diligent drones able to fly in swarms, as even specialized professionals are business opportunities.
