DJI Mini 2 – Problems & solutions

The DJI Mini 2 was launched on November 5th. and the time for the first evaluations has come.

The purpose of this post is to bring to the reader the pros and cons of this small drone that I remember weighs only 249 grams and therefore can be flown without the certificate for “Non-Critical Operations” but must still be registered on d-flight (see Blog article “d-flight – Register your drone (guide)“).

So let’s start with the negative aspects that you need to know in order not to make a purchase in the dark.

DJI Mini 2 – Problems

The various tests on the DJI Mini 2 have highlighted problems at the HW and SW level; the latter will hopefully be resolved as soon as possible with a firmware update. Where possible, the solutions (temporary workaround) to be adopted to minimize or eliminate the problem are indicated.

Piloting in sport mode

The sport piloting mode causes a problem on video shooting. In fact, there was a problem with the gimbal losing the horizon. This issue is known to DJI, but no SW fixes have been issued at this time.

Temporary workaround to solve the issue: To shoot in sport mode it is recommended to make gentle movements with the drone. By acting in this way the problem does not arise.

Noise effect on blacks

Due to the small sensor size of the DJI Mini 2, there is a noise effect on blacks. This problem has no solutions as it is linked to the size of the sensor. However, it is a minor problem.

Temporary workaround to solve the issue: none.

Line on video in 4K

In 4K video recording, you notice the presence of a small colored line in the upper left corner. The problem is known to DJI which they will fix with a firmware update.

Temporary workaround to solve the issue: 2.7K movie recording is recommended to avoid line presence.

Type-C and Micro-SD connector exposure

Both the Type-C connector and the MicroSD are positioned externally and are exposed. Even if they do not affect the performance of the DJI Mini 2, certainly dust can settle in the two slots which in the long run could affect its operation.

Workaround to solve the issue: place a small strip of masking tape (yellow color) so that it can cover the two slots and is easily removable.

Lack of obstacle sensors

The DJI Mini 2 has no front and rear anti-collision sensors. This, beyond the weight of only 249 grams (and therefore “flyable” without certification), makes the DJI Mini 2 suitable for an “expert pilot” able to control it perfectly because there is no way to prevent the drone hits an obstacle such as a wall, vegetation, etc.

Workaround to solve the problem: none. Put huge attention when you are piloting the DJI Mini 2.

DJI Mini 2 – Positive aspects

Let’s now analyze some positive aspects that may have escaped the reader in other reviews of the DJI Mini 2.

Type-C connector presence

The presence of the USB Type-C connector allows the complete recharge of the drone battery via power bank, in about 30 minutes. This then allows you to manage the drone battery (s) without a fixed power outlet or car charger. It therefore follows that you can avoid purchasing the combo version because by purchasing an additional battery and a power bank you can fly for one hour (the flight time depends on the flight mode chosen).

DJI Mini 2 – Ocusync

The Ocusync allows you to receive an excellent return signal from the DJI Mini 2 drone when the drone is positioned behind obstacles such as a wall, a tree etc.

DJI Mini 2 – Others aspects to be considered

Finally, here are some aspects that cannot be defined as negative but are certainly not positive that it is good to keep in mind regarding the DJI Mini 2.

App DJI Fly

It is the iOS and Android App for managing the DJI Mini 2 drone. The App is required and cannot be replaced by other Apps as it allows the management of the drone, accessories and batteries with their updates. Obviously not available for the DJI Mini 2, the advanced flight options, the follow me (not supported at the hardware level by the processor) and several panoramic flight modes are missing.

Remote control

The remote control is very large and comfortable to hold, however it does not have any screen, so there is no drone telemetry and other information that is normally reported on the screens found in the higher-end DJI drones of the DJI Mini 2.

Conclusions

The DJI Mini 2 is a good drone, but beware: it is not a drone for beginners, as the lack of anti-collision sensors is to the disadvantage of safety especially for those who push the small DJI Mini 2 to distances where perception of objects is lost (can not be inferred from the smartphone screen).

The possibility of flying without a certificate (drone license) may entice many people, but it is good to remember that safety comes first.

Furthermore, always remember that also based on the new EASA regulation on drones, which will come into force on 31/12/2020 the drone must be insured even if you are flying only as a hobby (see blog article “Drone insurance – obligation for everyone” ).

Keep getting message RC not connected. I can fly and control the drone just fine, just no video feed. Have now owned it for 4 weeks. Fifty percent of the time it works great. The other 50 percent, I have to shut it down after message “RC not connected”. I have loaded and reloaded app, rebooted iphone X, shut it off and turned it back on. Totally baffled and ready to send back. One conversation with tech support in India or Pakistan- hardly understood a word. Said just send back- no ideas other than standard scripted verbiage. Anyone have this problem? Any ideas that could help?
