The new DJI Mini 2 drone is available on the market, weighs only 249 grams, has a good photographic compartment on paper, has a relatively affordable price (459.00 for the basic version and € 599.00 for the combo version), but for what can i use it?

This is the question that many ask themselves. especially those who are tempted to buy the DJI Mini 2 to carry out professional activities in an urban environment. So let’s see what it is actually possible to do and not to do with the small DJI Mini 2.

DJI Mini 2 – On-board equipment at a glance

Let’s start with a brief super-summary of the DJI Mini 2’s on-board equipment, in reference to KPIs (Key Performance Indicators) defined by 4mydrone for drones, in the article “KPIs – Performance indicators for choosing the drone (guide)“.

  • Flight Time: 31 minutes without wind and at a speed of 16.92 km/h
  • Weight: 249 grams
  • Maximum tangency altitude: 4000 m without paragliders, 2000 m with paragliders
  • Maximum horizontal distance: 4 km
  • Maximum video transmission distance: 4 Km
  • Maximum wind resistance: 37.8 Km/h

Built-in Payload KPIs

  • Camera resolution: 12 MP
  • Maximum photo resolution: 4: 3: 4000 × 3000 – 16: 9: 4000 × 2250
  • Photo format: JPEG / DNG (RAW)
  • Maximum video resolution: 4K: 3840 × 2160 – 2.7K: 2720 × 1530 – FHD: 1920 × 1080
  • Maximum video bit/rate: 100 Mbps
  • Video formats: MP4 (H.264 / MPEG-4 AVC.

DJI Mini 2 – Possible uses and limitations

If the data provided by DJI is confirmed in the field, the KPIs of the DJI Mini 2, both for the drone part and the built-in payload part, are such as to make it suitable for carrying out professional activities.

In the leisure field, the DJI Mini2 is able to satisfy the lovers of photos and videos, as both the resolution of 12 MP for photos, and the 4K format for videos is more than necessary for a drone like this. small. In addition, the 31 minutes of flight are long and you can have enough fun.

In the professional field it can be used very well for carrying out a series of activities such as: aerial surveys, surveys, roof inspections, infrastructure inspections and aerial photogrammetry. in fact the camera is able to “capture” more than detailed aspects able to satisfy both a preliminary and a detailed analysis through the post-processing of the images and dedicated software.

A very interesting potential use of the DJI Mini 2, which I will return to in a future article, is that of confined inspections. But for these, the DJI Mini 2 – which I remember has a diagonal of only 21.3 cm – must be “modified”, also considering the fact that it has no front and rear anti-collision sensors.

If I use it for work do I need a license?

It should not be forgotten that the current ENAC (italy) legislation and the forthcoming EASA (Europe) (which entered into force 1st January 2021) provide that for:

drones under 250 grams used for leisure:

  • they do not need – to be piloted a certificate -;
  • need insurance,
  • need to register on the d-flight portal (as they are equipped with a camera),
  • moreover the pilots must always respect the following prescriptions:
    • Never fly over crowds of people,
    • Fly 150 meters from congested infrastructure / areas,
    • Fly 50 meters from people not involved,
    • Fly maximum up to 120 meters in height,
    • Flying 5 km away from airports without ATZ,
    • Always fly in sight [VLOS (Visual Line Of Sight)].

In consideration of the EASA European regulation, the DJI Mini 2 can be used by anyone for any purpose without a license as long as they respect the rules provided for the sub-category C0 – Open.

Open Category C0 Obligations
